The Tallahassee Moving Checklist: A Week-by-Week Timeline
Every move feels chaotic in the last forty-eight hours and calm in hindsight. The difference is almost always a timeline — doing the right small things in the right weeks instead of everything in the final three days. At Capital City Moving Co, we've moved Tallahassee households since 2014, through summer heat, hurricane season, and more FSU move-out weekends than we can count. This is the timeline we wish every customer followed.
Print it, pin it to the fridge, and check things off as you go.
Four Weeks Out: Decide and Book
Book your movers. Good dates go first — weekends, end-of-month, and anything near FSU move-in or move-out are the most competitive. Booking four weeks out gets you your date instead of your third-choice date. Start at our homepage
or call for a free quote.
Declutter before you pack. Every box you move costs time and money. Walk each room and sort: keep, donate, sell, toss. If the "toss" pile outgrows your trash can, a junk removal haul now is cheaper than moving things you don't want.
Gather supplies. Boxes (more small ones than you think — books are heavy), tape, markers, packing paper, and a few wardrobe boxes.
Notify the list. Start a folder for change-of-address items: utilities, subscriptions, voter registration, your bank, and the post office.
Three Weeks Out: Pack the Easy Half
Pack everything you won't touch before the move. Books, out-of-season clothes, the good china, decor, spare linens, and closet contents you rarely open. In summer, pack the garage and attic early, in the morning — a Florida attic at 2 PM in July is nobody's friend.
Label like you mean it. Room, contents, and "fragile" where it applies — on two sides of the box, not just the top. Future you, standing in the new kitchen at 9 PM looking for the coffee maker, sends thanks.
Photograph your electronics setups. TV and computer cable configurations, photographed before unplugging, save real time on the other end.
Arrange specialty items. If you have a piano, a safe, or anything oversized, confirm it's on your movers' plan — our piano moving
service exists because these items need their own equipment and approach, not a moving-day improvisation.
Use up the freezer. Start eating down frozen food and pantry stock. You can't move ice cream in August in Florida. Nobody should try.
Two Weeks Out: Confirm the Logistics
Confirm utilities at both addresses. In Tallahassee that means setting your electric and water start/stop dates so the new place is live when you arrive and the old one isn't dark while you're still loading. Do the same for internet — installation appointments book out.
Confirm the move with your movers. Date, arrival window, addresses, parking situation, and anything you've added or removed from the inventory since the quote.
Handle the access details. Moving into or out of an apartment? Reserve the elevator if your complex requires it and check their moving rules — our apartment moving
page covers what complexes typically ask for. Buying or selling? Confirm closing times still line up with the move.
Pack an essentials box — and don't let it be loaded. Medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic tools, paper towels, toilet paper, snacks, and the coffee supplies. This box rides in your car.
Plan for kids and pets on the day. A family member, a friend, or a sitter — moving day is loud, open-doored, and full of heavy furniture in motion. Small kids and animals are safer and happier elsewhere for a few hours.
One Week Out: Finish and Prepare
Finish packing everything except daily essentials. If it's not packed by now, it becomes the last-forty-eight-hours chaos this checklist exists to prevent.
Defrost the freezer if the fridge is moving with you, at least 24 hours ahead, and dry it out — a fridge moved wet arrives smelling like it.
Set aside what movers shouldn't take. Important documents, jewelry, cash, firearms, and anything irreplaceable travel with you, not in the truck.
Check the weather — honestly. If you're moving during hurricane season (June through November), watch the forecast this week, not the morning of. A named storm changes plans; talk to your movers early if one is tracking toward the Big Bend so the day can be rescheduled with options instead of panic.
Cash and water. Have payment sorted per your booking, and stock cold water for everyone on the day. A Tallahassee summer move is physical work in serious heat — for you and the crew.
Moving Day
Be reachable and be there. The crew leader will walk the home with you at the start and the end. Your job is to answer questions and point; theirs is everything heavy.
Do a final walkthrough before the truck closes. Every room, closet, the attic, the garage, behind every door. Then the same at the new place as items come off: direct boxes to their labeled rooms as they arrive, which makes unpacking dramatically easier.
Check the essentials box made it into your car, not the truck. Check twice. Ask us how we know.
First night priorities: beds assembled, bathroom stocked, one lamp per bedroom, and the coffee maker found. The rest can wait until morning.
After the Move
Unpack room by room, kitchen and bedrooms first. Break down boxes as you empty them so the pile doesn't become a second move.
If you moved within Florida, update your driver's license and registration address — the state gives you a short window to do it.
If you're in a new-to-you part of the area, welcome. If your move took you to or from Crawfordville
, Quincy, Havana, Midway, Monticello, or Thomasville, you're in our service area for the next one too.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far ahead should I book movers in Tallahassee?
Two to four weeks ahead for most local moves. For summer weekends, end-of-month dates, and FSU move-in/move-out periods, book as early as you possibly can.
What should I do with things I don't want to move?
Sell, donate, or have them hauled away before packing starts. Moving unwanted items costs time and money at both ends of the move.
What if a hurricane or storm threatens my moving day?
Call your movers as soon as the forecast turns, not the morning of. Rescheduling a few days out is simple; the day of a storm, it isn't.
Can you move a piano as part of a regular move?
Yes — just flag it when you book so the crew and equipment are planned for it. Pianos moved as an afterthought are how pianos (and floors) get hurt.
